Pittsburgh Pirates Closer Felipe Vazquez Arrested Over Alleged Child Solicitation Charges

Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher Felipe Vazquez was arrested and is facing charges related to his alleged sexual involvement with a child.

Police in Lee County, Fla., said on Tuesday that Vazquez, 28, is facing multiple charges including solicitation of a minor, providing obscene material to minors and computer pornography. The charges stem from an investigation that began in August and revealed Vazquez had a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old child, whom he communicated with via text message.

Major League Baseball has placed Vazquez on administrative leave. Vazquez is in his fourth season with the Pirates, who acquired him in a trade with the Washington Nationals back in 2016. The left-hander has a 1.65 ERA with 28 saves in 31 attempts.

New York Giants Bench Eli Manning; Elevate Daniel Jones To Starting QB

Three weeks into the season, the New York Giants announced on Tuesday that 38-year-old QB Eli Manning will be benched in favor of rookie Daniel Jones.

Coach Pat Shurmur said in a statement, “Eli and I spoke this morning, I told him that we are making a change and going with Daniel as the starter. I also talked to Daniel. Eli was obviously disappointed, as you would expect, but he said he would be what he has always been, a good teammate, and continue to prepare to help this team win games.” He added, “This move is more about Daniel moving forward than about Eli.”

The Giants are 0-2 to start the season, losing to the Dallas Cowboys and the Buffalo Bills. Manning completed 56 of 89 passes for 556 yards in those games, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Since Manning’s second Super Bowl win the team has made the playoffs only once, losing in the first round in 2016.

Jones will begin on Sunday in Tampa, Fla., against the Buccaneers.

U.S. Service Member Killed In Action In Afghanistan

A U.S. service member was killed in action in Afghanistan on Monday, becoming the 17th American to be killed in combat there this year. The identity of the service member is being withheld pending family notification.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump said that he canceled secret talks with the Taliban that were to be held at Camp David after the Taliban took credit for an attack in Kabul, Afghanistan, that killed a dozen people, including an American soldier.

The US currently has about 14,000 service members in Afghanistan, alongside NATO troops. The Afghan government has blamed the Taliban for the canceled peace talks, saying the group’s “obstinacy to increase violence against Afghans” is the “main obstacle” to peace negotiations.
