Chicago Cubs Part Ways With Manager Joe Maddon After Five Seasons

The Chicago Cubs and manager Joe Maddon are parting ways, team president Theo Epstein and Maddon announced together on Sunday.

Maddon, 65, led the Cubs to their first World Series title in 108 years; he is officially a free agent since the Cubs missed the postseason for the first time in five years following a nine-game losing streak in late September.

Maddon and Epstein made the announcement in St. Louis, with Maddon saying: “we’re both going to move on. Hopefully, the Cubs are going to flourish. Hopefully, I get a chance to do this someplace else. But there’s no tears shed. It’s a good moment for everybody. And we’re both excited about our futures.”

“We both agreed that, this type of change, that it’s time and that this type of change is a win-win.” Epstein said, adding that the Cubs were at a point where they needed a change.

Senate Passes Bill To Avoid Government Shutdown Risk

On Thursday, the Senate passed a short-term funding bill amid dispute over border wall funding that delays the risk of a government shutdown through Nov. 21.

The Senate voted 82-15 in favor of the continuing resolution after the House already passed it, and it will go to President Donald Trump next for his signature. The President is expected to sign it to prevent a government shutdown that would otherwise occur on Oct. 1 if such an appropriations bill was not enacted.

The continuing resolution delays the fight over the U.S.-Mexico border wall spending through Nov. 21, when the dispute may slowdown passage again just a week before Thanksgiving.

Whistleblower Complaint Says White House Acted To “Lock Down’ Trump-Ukraine Call

A whistleblower’s complaint about President Donald Trump was made public on Thursday.  In the complaint, it states that the White House officials were so concerned about what the president said in a July call with Ukraine’s new leader that they intervened to “lock down” the transcript of the conversation.

The whistleblower’s name and gender has not been released; they lodged the formal complaint out of a belief that Trump was “using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country” in the 2020 election.

In the call, Trump discussed having Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy help investigate the Biden family’s business dealings. The matter is now the subject of a formal impeachment inquiry that was launched by the House this week.
