Texas Rangers SS Corey Seager to miss at least 4 weeks with hamstring strain

Texas Rangers general manager Chris Young told reporters Wednesday that shortstop Corey Seager will miss at least four weeks after being diagnosed with a Grade 2 strain of his left hamstring. Seager suffered the injury while running to second base on a double in Tuesday’s victory over Kansas City, grabbing at his left hamstring as he reached second base and immediately left the game.

The Rangers placed Seager on the 10-day injured list and activated outfielder Leodys Taveras from the IL in a corresponding roster move before Wednesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals. Josh Smith was started in place of Seager at shortstop and batted second in Texas’ starting lineup Wednesday.

Seager missed about 2½ months of the 2021 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers with a fractured right hand after getting hit by a pitch. He spent nearly a month on the IL in 2019 with a left hamstring strain and was limited to only 26 games in 2018 because of right elbow surgery.  Seager, a three-time All-Star in the second year of a $325 million, 10-year contract with the Rangers, is batting .359 this season. He played 151 games in his debut season with the Rangers last year.

NY Yankees manager Aaron Boone ejected after confusion over replay review

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone was ejected in the first inning during the Yankees matchup against the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday, following an argument with umpires over a play that was not initially reviewed by instant replay.

Cleveland had runners at second and third with one out when Josh Naylor hit a looper to center field that Yankees outfielder Aaron Hicks appeared to catch with a sliding grab. Hicks then threw to second for a force-out and an apparent inning-ending double play. After both teams left the field, however, a replay was shown on the giant left-field scoreboard of Hicks failing to make the catch.

While it wasn’t immediately clear if Guardians manager Terry Francona had requested a challenge in the allotted 15 seconds, crew chief Larry Vanover huddled with the umpires for several minutes in the middle of the infield and first spoke to Francona, who appeared to be satisfied with what he was told.  Boone then came onto the field, obviously upset because the Guardians had taken so long to request the challenge. Boone spent several minutes pleading his case after the Yankees appeared to end the first with a double play. Boone left the field at least three times before returning to get more clarity on the play. After an obviously hostile and heated exchange, Boone was thrown out for the first time this season; and the 27th time in his career.

After the nearly 10-minute interruption, the umpires ruled that Naylor’s ball dropped in for a base hit and an RBI. Guardians first baseman Josh Bell hit an RBI single to give Cleveland a 2-0 lead when play finally resumed; however, the Yankees ultimately won the game with a final score of 4-3.

Granger Smith leaving country music to focus on ministry

Granger Smith said he’s quitting country music to pursue ministry.  The 43-year-old singer announced on social media that he is stepping away from country music to focus on ministry with his family, sharing in a video: “I have felt a strong desire to pursue ministry, and this doesn’t mean I’m going to start a church or a crusade or a revival, this means that me and my family are going to serve our local church. We’re going to pour into that church as members, and have my pastors and elders pour into me and disciple me and teach me as I sit under their wise teaching. And then Lord willing, one day, they will affirm me into the next steps of what that might look like to glorify God best from my platform.”  Smith also said he’s been attending Southern Baptist Theological Seminary that “takes a ton of time to pursue my [masters degree].”

Said Smith: “This message is so difficult to post. The words for this caption are so hard to find. Not because I don’t believe in the truth of them, but because this marks the end of the longest era in my life! Touring…24 years of it. This summer will be my last tour. I am so encouraged and hopeful and excited and joyful about the next chapter, but to a large extent, I have no idea what it will look like. I just want to glorify God the best way that I can. I want to learn and grow and serve my local church and allow my pastors to equip and affirm those next steps. Lord willing, I want to be used to help people find their purpose.”

Smith will also release his book, Like a River: Finding the Faith and Strength to Move Forward After Loss and Heartache, in August.  The project was inspired by the loss of his youngest son River who died of an accidental drowning in the family pool in 2019 at age 3.  Smith and his alter ego Earl Dibbs Jr. will wrap up their country music careers with his Like a River tour, named after his late son. The tour begins Thursday in Oshkosh, Wisc. before wrapping up in July.

Louisville bank gunman legally purchased rifle less than a week before mass shooting

Officials said on Tuesday that the gunman who killed five co-workers at a Louisville bank on Monday had legally purchased the high-powered rifle used in the mass shooting less than a week ago. Interim Louisville Police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel told reporters that the gunman, 25-year-old Connor Sturgeon, bought the AR-15-style weapon from an authorized seller: “We have also learned that he purchased the weapon used in this tragic incident yesterday on April 4. He purchased the weapon legally from one of the local dealerships here in Louisville.”

Louisville Rep. Morgan McGarvey also revealed that the shooter had sent disturbing text messages signaling he was considering harming himself before Monday’s shooting: “We know he left a note, we know he texted or called at least one person to let them know that he was suicidal and contemplating harm. But we don’t have the tools on the books to deal with someone who is an imminent danger to themselves or to others.”

Louisville police also made public the police body camera footage on Tuesday, showing how officers confronted Sturgeon on Monday morning at Old National Bank in downtown Louisville. Two officers, Cory Galloway and Nickolas Wilt, were shot by Sturgeon. Galloway was grazed on his left side, while Wilt was shot in the head. The 26-year-old Wilt underwent surgery Monday and was listed in critical condition; he was a recent academy graduate and on only his fourth shift when he rushed toward the bank alongside his Galloway, his field training officer. Police confirmed that Galloway was the officer who killed Sturgeon.  Police Chief Gwinn-Villaroel said: “I am just truly proud of the heroic actions of those two officers. “They went toward danger in order to save and preserve life and that’s what you saw yesterday. They stopped the threat so other lives could be saved. No hesitation and they did what they were called to do.”

Among the victims were Deana Eckert, 57, was rushed to the hospital following the shooting barrage and died Monday night. Four others — Joshua Barrick, 40; Thomas Elliott, 63; Juliana Farmer, 45; and James Tutt, 64 — died earlier in the day. Jefferson County Coroner’s Office records revealed Tuesday that all five were victims of “multiple gunshot wounds” with homicide listed as the cause of death.

Manhattan DA sues House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan to block inquiry into Trump case

On Tuesday, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg filed a lawsuit against Republican House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, asking a court to block elements of the congressional inquiry into his case against former President Donald Trump. Trump pleaded not guilty last week to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to his role in hush money payments made toward the end of his 2016 presidential campaign.

Bragg called the GOP’s inquiry an “unprecedently brazen and unconstitutional attack” of an ongoing investigation, and said in the suit that allowing Jordan’s demands would cause “imminent irreparable harm if the secret and privileged material is compelled to be disclosed.” Bragg’s suit asked the court to block Jordan’s subpoena of former Assistant DA Mark Pomerantz. Jordan has requested that Pomerantz to sit for a deposition as part of the Judiciary panel’s investigation into the indictment of Trump.

Bragg said in a statement Tuesday: “Chairman Jordan’s subpoena is an unconstitutional attempt to undermine an ongoing New York felony criminal prosecution and investigation. As our complaint details, this is an unprecedented, illegitimate interference by Congress that lacks any legal merit and defies basic principles of federalism.”  The lawsuit from Bragg is the culmination of an ongoing dispute between Bragg and Jordan, who issued the subpoena to Pomerantz two days after former President Trump was charged with 34 felony counts. Bragg said that Jordan was attempting to “undermine” the criminal case against Trump by seeking Pomerantz’s testimony.

In response, Jordan tweeted that the lawsuit attempts to block congressional oversight: “First, they indict a president for no crime. Then, they sue to block congressional oversight when we ask questions about the federal funds they say they used to do it.”

A federal judge in New York has scheduled an April 19 hearing for Bragg’s lawsuit.

Detroit Lions trade cornerback Jeff Okudah to the Atlanta Falcons

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Atlanta Falcons have acquiring cornerback Jeff Okudah in a trade with the Detroit Lions. ESPN’s Adam Schefter later tweeted that Detroit is receiving a 2023 fifth-round pick in exchange for Okudah.

The 24 -year-old Okudah was the No. 3 pick in the 2020 draft and had spent the past three seasons in Detroit. Okudah dealt with injuries in his first two season, playing in just nine games as a rookie while dealing with a core muscle injury, In 2021, Okudah ruptured his achilles during Week 1, causing him to miss the rest of the season. Last season, a healthy Okudah started in 15 of the team’s 17 games, totaling 73 tackles and one interception for the improved Lions defense.

Okudah now joins Atlanta with a cornerback room including A.J. Terrell and veteran Casey Hayward. The Falcons have the opportunity to pick up Okudah fifth-year option, or to let Okudah play on the final year of his contract in 2023.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ LB Devin White requests trade

As first reported by ESPN‘s Jenna Laine, Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ linebacker Devin White has requested a trade. ESPN‘s Adam Schefter tweeted on Tuesday that Bucs’ Pro Bowl LB Devin White has in fact requested a trade, as @JennaLaineESPN reported. Bucs do not want to trade him, but he wants to be traded as he is coming up on his fifth-year option worth $11.7 million, which the team already picked up.”

Sources familiar with the story told ESPN that White has grown increasingly frustrated with the team and is ‘fed up,’ but did not provide specifics on the root cause of White’s frustration, other than saying he has become very unhappy in his current situation. Another source told ESPN that White’s frustrations stem from negotiations over a new contract.

White, the fifth pick in the 2019 NFL draft, played a key role in the Bucs’ Super Bowl LV run in 2020 and has spent each of the past four seasons with the team. In those years, White has played in 62 total games and recorded 453 total tackles and 20 1/2 sacks, and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2021.

The Bucs secured White’s counterpart, veteran linebacker Lavonte David, to a one-year contract to keep the pair together at least one more year. A month ago, White posted a series of cryptic messages to his Instagram stories, saying “4 year[s] went by fast” and “thank ya,” along with a pirate flag and a ✌🏽 emoji. He then included a photograph with the sign, “God isn’t asking you to figure it out. He’s asking you to trust that he already has.” White later clarified the posts, tweeting, “Reflecting on how fast my first four years went by, def a thanks to Bucs fans ‘good & mean ones lol’ The upside is scary.”
