Fundraiser for Rep. George Santos is indicted for allegedly impersonating top House aide

A campaign fundraiser who worked with Rep. George Santos has been indicted on four counts of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft, after he allegedly impersonated a top aide to a member of the House while contacting donors for Santos’ campaign. Santos’ office has declined to comment on Miele.

According to an indictment and memo filed in federal court, during the 2022 election cycle Samuel Miele allegedly impersonated someone labeled “Person #1” in the indictment (who is believed to be the chief of staff to now-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, according to reports from CNBC and The New York Times. In a separate memo, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York alerted federal judges in New York that Miele had been indicted over alleged efforts to “defraud prospective contributors to Devolder Santos’s campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives during the 2022 election cycle.”

The indictment of Miele claims he “falsely and without authorization impersonated Person #1, in both email and telephone communications with potential contributors, for the purpose of soliciting financial contributions to support the campaign and enriching himself through commissions earned on these financial contributions to the campaign.” The indictment says Miele’s commission was 15% of each contribution; Miele allegedly admitted in a letter to “faking my identity to a big donor,” saying he was “high risk, high reward in everything I do.” Miele did not respond to a request seeking comment; an initial court date in his case has not yet been set.

Santos pleaded not guilty on charges filed in May of fraud, money laundering and more crimes. Federal prosecutors allege in Santos’ case that the freshman congressman from New York’s Long Island operated a limited liability company to defraud prospective supporters of his 2022 congressional campaign, and that Santos induced supporters to donate money to the unnamed company “under the false pretense that the money would be used to support” his candidacy. In addition to his federal court case, Santos faces an investigation by the House Ethics Committee.

President Biden and First Lady to visit Maui after wildfires

According to a statement released by the White House on Wednesday, President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will travel to Maui on Monday, August 21 after devastating wildfires on the Hawaiian island killed more than 100 people and caused mass destruction in the area. The death toll from the fires rose to 106 on Wednesday as recovery efforts continued.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that Mr. and Mrs. Biden will meet with first responders, survivors, as well as federal, state, and local officials during their trip: “The president and first lady will be welcomed by state and local leaders to see firsthand the impacts of the wildfires and the devastating loss of life and land that has occurred on the island, as well as discuss the next steps in the recovery effort. The president continues to marshal a whole-of-government response to the deadly Maui fires, and he has committed to delivering everything that the people of Hawaii need from the federal government as they recover from this disaster.”

The White House has been working closely with Hawaii’s Senators Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz, Gov. Josh Green, and FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell, keeping the President up-to-date on search and recovery efforts. FEMA said more than 4,400 survivors have registered for federal assistance and may be eligible for immediate resources, including hotel rooms or financial assistance. Criswell said on Wednesday that FEMA has approved more than $2.3 million in assistance to 1,331 households, including more than $798,000 in initial rental assistance, to help survivors start the recovery process. FEMA also opened a joint disaster recovery center where survivors can speak face-to-face with FEMA specialists to have access to other federal and state resources.

Biden had said earlier in the week that while he wanted to travel to Maui, he wanted to ensure that a presidential visit would not hinder recovery efforts. “I don’t want to get in the way — I’ve been to too many disaster areas, but I want to go and make sure we got everything we need. I want to be sure we don’t disrupt the ongoing recovery efforts,” Biden said, adding that he pledged Maui will have “every asset, every asset they need.”

Tampa Bay WR Russell Gage suffers season-ending knee injury in practice with Jets

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ wide receiver Russell Gage will miss the entire 2023 campaign after suffering a knee injury in a joint practice with the NY Jets on Wednesday. Gage had been battling back from a neck injury he suffered on a hit in January’s playoff loss to the Cowboys.

Gage, 27, made a catch on “relatively low” short pass from Baker Mayfield before seemingly being “routinely pushed to the ground” by a Jets defender, according to Joe Bucs Fan. Pewter Report tweeted that Gage could not put any weight on his leg after he went down, while team reporter Scott Smith said that Gage was in “obvious duress” while being attended to by trainers. Gage will undergo medical tests to confirm the severity of the injury. Bucs head coach Todd Bowles told reporters: “We wish him the best … I could tell that the way he was sitting on the truck that something pretty bad happened. Our hearts go out to him.”

Gage was originally a sixth-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons in 2018 out of LSU; and in four seasons with Atlanta, he caught 193 passes for 2,065 yards and nine touchdowns. Gage signed a three-year deal with the Buccaneers last offseason; he caught 51 passes for 426 yards and a career-high five touchdowns in 13 games played in 2022, his first year with the Buccaneers.

Ashley McBryde shares her latest song ‘Cool Little Bars’

Ashley McBryde has released the video for “Cool Little Bars,” off her upcoming album The Devil I Know set for released on September 8th.  The song was co-written by McBryde along with Trick Savage and Lainey Wilson.

Said McBryde of ‘Cool Little Bars’ – “As y’all know, I have a huge appreciation for bars that have stood the test of time and have a lot of character. I played them for many, many years, and I’m proud of the education I gained, and I’m proud to be able to give such bars credit for my entertainment style. In a time when so many of our staple establishments are being torn down to make room for far less charming, sterile and predictable gathering spaces, I thought we’d better celebrate the ones we have left and the ones we’ve yet to warm a seat in. With the help of Trick Savage and Lainey Wilson, I think we said it pretty good. So, thank you for dart boards, sticky table tops, bathrooms with broken stall doors and bartenders that can mix a drink while whoopin’ an ass. We see you and we need you. God bless cool little bars.”

McBryde will be on the road through the end of summer headlining and performing at festival shows, along with teaming up with Jelly Roll and Dierks Bentley for additional tour dates.

Britney Spears’ husband Sam Asghari files for divorce after 14 months of marriage

Britney Spears husband Sam Asghari filed for divorce on Wednesday after 14 months of marriage, citing “irreconcilable differences” in the divorce filing. TMZ was the first to report the news that the couple had split and were currently living separately, with multiple sources noting that the separation stemmed from  “a nuclear argument that involve[d] allegations of cheating.”

Spears, 41, first met the 29-year-old Asghari — a model, actor, and fitness trainer — on the set of her music video for “Slumber Party,” from her album Glory, in 2016. The couple married in June 2022 in a lavish, star-studded wedding held in Los Angeles with approximately 60 guests in attendance, including Drew Barrymore, Madonna, Paris Hilton and Selena Gomez.

Spears and Asghari’s union marked Spears’ third marriage, and Asghari’s first. Spears was previously married to her childhood friend, Jason Allen Alexander, for 55 hours in 2004. Following the annulment, Spears married Kevin Federline that same year. The duo divorced in 2007, and share two children: Sean Preston, 17, and Jayden James, 16

Asghari and Spears were together throughout her efforts to terminate her conservatorship, which came to an end in November 2021, allowing Spears to regain control of her estate and finances. However, rumors began circulating in March that the couple were having marital woes. When addressing photos that showed Asghari and Spears without their wedding bands, Asghari’s rep, Brandon Cohen from BAC Talent, told PEOPLE that Asghari simply took off his ring because he was filming a movie.

Usher releases music video for ‘Boyfriend’ featuring Keke Palmer

Usher has dropped the video for his new song titled “Boyfriend”, which stars actress and singer Keke Palmer.   The collaboration between Usher and Palmer comes shortly after the viral moment when Usher serenaded Keke at his Las Vegas residency, where she was later criticized by her boyfriend Darius Jackson, who is also the father of her child.

Jackson called out Palmer in numerous tweets after she was seen wearing a black, sheer outfit to Usher’s Vegas concert. Jackson’s initial tweet featured Palmer being serenaded by Usher with the caption. “It’s the outfit tho… you a mom.” After receiving backlash, Jackson didn’t back down, later tweeting: “We live in a generation where a man of the family doesn’t want the wife & mother to his kids to showcase booty cheeks to please others & he gets told how much of a hater he is. This is my family & my representation. I have standards & morals to what I believe. I rest my case.”

In response to the drama, Palmer released a line of T-shirts she promoted on her Instagram, sharing: “One thing is certain and one thing is true, IM A MOTHA, through and through! ‘IM A MOTHA’ and ‘Stevie to the bulls***’ shirts available NOW! To all my mom’s out there, how did your baby change you?? Mine empowered me! On such another level, my perspective changed because when my baby is good I’m GREAT! Look at that face! Gratitude galore.”

When sharing the ‘Boyfriend’ video on Instagram, Usher referenced the incident with the cheeky caption: ‘Nothing that happens in Vegas stays in Vegas…’Boyfriend’ starring the BIG BOSS herself @keke OUT NOW’
